There are two way to get Mu Cang Chai tour: By motorbike or trekking tour with car or shuttle bus. Most of companies organize Mu Cang Chai tour from Hanoi, with two or a few days, with or without homestay, with local guides or connect with other tourism destinations as Sapa, Moc Chau (Son La) and so on…
1º Recommendation: Different with Sapa – is developing
tourism too fast, and too busy with domestic and foreigner tourists, Mu CangChai is still hidden area with the nature beauty of rice terraces, the
friendly locals of Thai or Mong ethnic
people here.
We signed up a 3 Day2Night Mu Cang Chai trekking experience
with Zonitrip - an organization that
operates local tours in Mu Cang Chai and in
numerous other destination in North Vietnam.. Why we pick them? Because
we wanted to the trekking in Mu Cang Chai would be well organized, private, and
that we would be helping the community by staying in a homestay and eating in
family restaurants.
What make this 3 days our tour Mu Cang Chai so special ?
Nature is stunning and the people welcoming. Most of the trekking route was
empty, no travelers, only/just us and local people. We had the opportunity to
see, experience and discovery the life of ethnic people in Mu Cang Chai on our
pace. Our guide is Mrs Nghia, a local guy , she speaks the English good and
Vietnamese, she knows Vietnamese and other groups: Thai, Dao, H’mong culture,
the farming work extremely well. She took us to interesting places that wasn’t
on the Mu Cang Chai tour itinerary, like visiting the house of a H’mong man
that show us the traditional dance, process to cook wine rice or draw bee wax
to make clothes.

» When is the best
time to visit Mu Cang Chai the rice terraces?
There is no best time to travel to Mu Cang Chai mountains,
it all depends on what would you like to
see. We were there by the end of March, the rice paddy were being filled with
water, warm weather and sunny days. If you want to see the terraces full of
water and people working on them the best time to travel to Mu Cang Chai is
May, the flowers will be blooming and the weather is charming.

For green rice fields, June is the best time to visit Mu
Cang Chai, however be prepared for rain and hot weather. July and August are
not so wet but still hot. September is the best time to see the Mu Cang Chai
changing colours, on the terraces field
you can spot all shades of green, yellow and golden. The weather is nice, but
town and mountains get pressed, this is high season in Mu Cang Chai.

December to January is winter with heavy snow. Nature and
mountains are beautiful, but it’s difficult to enjoy the outdoors.
You can get
to Mu Cang Chai by bus/car/motorbike. There is a new expressway that connects
Hanoi to Yen Bai within 2 hours, then continue take a motorbike from Yen Bai –
Mu Cang Chai. (Zonitrip offer this bike, it will be save your time and
health). In addition, Zonitrip arrange
the private car for you from Hanoi – Mu Cang Chai.
» Where
to stay in Mu Cang Chai? Homestay or Hotel?
There
are only a few hostels and hotels in Mu
Cang Chai as Sapa. Zonitrip booked for us to stay at homestay of Thai people in
Mu Cang Chai village and Nghia Lo illage. It was really unique and unforgettable
experience. I truly enjoyed having local foods, local alcoholic drinks and
taking stunning photos. The ethnic families we stayed with were beyond
welcoming, and Nghia knew where to go to get a taste of authentic
